2009 GWHS Garden Tour - Description and Picture Preview
Garden # 1: A 6300-gallon Koi pond with waterfalls, millhouse and a water garden are the central features at this home. Other highlights of the landscape include a rose garden surrounding the pool, birdbaths and bird and squirrel feeders. Evergreens, shrubs, perennials and annual beds surround the property and attract numerous birds and butterflies to the yard.

Garden # 2: A cutting garden with many native and period perennials may be enjoyed at this home. A parlor garden contains herbs and fragrance plants. A 4-square mixes vegetables, flowers and herbs. The grounds have many seating areas, an orchard and espaliered apple tree.
Garden # 3: After a trip to Williamsburg, VA, these homeowners were inspired to have their own colonial garden made with all recycled materials. Numerous shade and sun perennial plantings and colonial flower and vegetable gardens are featured.
Garden # 4: This old farmstead is in a rural setting with towering mature trees, including natives, evergreens and an orchard. Sprawling new garden areas including rose gardens, woodland shade gardens, hot perennials and a thyme bed. Native plants are a specialty here for the wildlife. Also, extensive vegetable gardens and a meadow-in-the-making.
Garden # 5: Country organic gardening with coversites for birds and butterflies. A water feature provides relaxation and nature's nourishment in this garden. Pay attention to plant markers of interest.
Garden # 6: This home has front gardens that
feature roses, perennials and annuals. The backyard features island
gardens of annuals, perennials, birdbaths and feeders geared to attracting
butterflies and birds.
Garden # 7: A white Nantucket fence and arbor greet visitors to this home's predominantly perennial gardens in both the front and backyards. A fountain and mini-pond compliment plantings of daylilies. A shade garden brimming with hostas under a canopy of tall maple trees provides a quiet respite from the summer sun. Annuals and garden accessories add color and interest throughout.
Governor Wolf Historical Society Period Garden: Formal herb and pleasure garden funded and maintained by the Valley Herb Guild. The design of the garden and plant material are period correct for the year 1785. This garden features an apple fence and four apple arbors.
